St. Mary’s Island: Karnataka’s Hidden Paradise
It all began with an unpredictable plan to take a solo trip to an island. Visiting temples, beaches, trekking trails, and unknown places had become routine. But an island felt unique. Exciting. Refreshing. That’s when an understated little island near Udupi popped into my mind. And now, let me be your guide.
Coastal Karnataka is known for its beaches, food, and rich culture. But did you know there’s an island here that’s still underrated despite its stunning scenic beauty? Welcome to St. Mary’s Island in Malpe. Now a proud new entry on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list!
St. Mary's Island; a hidden paradise
These islands are a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe in Udupi district.
They are well known for their basalt rocks, known to be formed from volcanoes dated back to 88 million years. The islands captivate visitors with their basaltic-rhyodacitic rocks and hexagonal rock formations.
Historical identity
With the discovery of the sea route to India in 1498, Vasco da Gama landed here and named it 'St. Mary's Island' as a dedication to St. Mary, the Virgin Mother of Jesus Christ.
This 'no inhabitant island' is called 'Thonsepar' or 'Narikela' as it consists of a large number of coconut trees. The island is about 500 m in length and 100 m in width.

How to reach and when to visit?
St. Mary's Island is located about 10 km from Udupi city and 6 km off the coast of Malpe. Ferry services are available from Malpe Beach to the island, which you will remember for a lifetime! It will be one of the coolest ferry rides you will ever experience!
The frequency of the ferry will be every 20 minutes and costs around 250–350 INR per person. The best season to visit is the dry season, October to February. Avoid visiting during the monsoon due to ferry closure. There are exciting water sports such as jet skiing, banana boat rides, bumpy rides, and parasailing. You should try parasailing! (A personal recommendation)
Tips from the Solo Trip
There is no option to stay on the island. It is meant for only day trips. Don't forget to carry water, snacks, a hat or umbrella. Do not litter. The place has dustbins. It is our responsibility to keep the island clean and let others explore it too without feeling uncomfortable.
Island, but not an Island?!
It is called an island, but not a complete island. You can have a view of Malpe Beach from here. And this island is full of visitors, so there is entertainment! And do not forget to collect seashells scattered throughout the shore.
This island has scenic beauty at its best. You don't feel the scorching sun. All you want is to take off your footwear, feel the cool breeze playing through your hair, and the hot sand beneath your foot.
